A study investigating the effect of orlistat on weight loss in adult male patients with type 2 diabetes showed that orlistat reduced the body weight and blood pressure compared with placebo, although this was not sustained. A meta-analysis conducted on 8 clinical trials of orlistat showed that the benefits were sustained for up to 5 years after initiation. In this study, the weight loss was greater than placebo in the following 5 years after initiation of treatment.

At the end of treatment, orlistat group showed greater reductions in blood pressure and blood glucose compared with the placebo group. The mean change in blood pressure at baseline was 0.3 mm Hg in the orlistat group and 0.1 mm Hg in the placebo group. The mean change in blood glucose during treatment was 4.3% in the orlistat group and 2.8% in the placebo group. These changes were significantly greater in the orlistat group compared with the placebo group at 1 year (5.0% in the orlistat group and 3.7% in the placebo group).
